South Dakota Heat Pump Rebates & Incentives
Every heat pump rebate available to South Dakota homeowners in 2026.
Federal 25C Tax Credit — Expired
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (up to $2,000 for heat pumps) expired on December 31, 2025. Heat pumps installed in 2026 no longer qualify for this credit.
- ✅ The HEEHRA rebate (below) was not repealed — up to $8,000 for income-qualified households
- ✅ South Dakota state and utility rebates still apply to all homeowners
- ✕ No 25C federal credit for heat pumps placed in service after Dec 31, 2025
HEEHRA Federal Rebate
The Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEEHRA) program provides up to $8,000 toward a heat pump for households at or below 150% of area median income, administered by South Dakota. Unlike the expired 25C credit, this is an upfront rebate, not a tax credit.
- ✅ Up to $8,000 for heat pumps (income-qualified)
- ✅ Available as a point-of-sale discount where the program has launched
- ✅ Can be combined with South Dakota state and utility rebates
South Dakota State & Utility Rebate
South Dakota has no statewide heat-pump rebate; cold-climate units recommended.
While South Dakota does not run a large statewide heat-pump rebate, individual utilities often offer their own incentives. Check with Otter Tail Power for current offers.
Heat Pumps in South Dakota's Climate
South Dakota is a very cold climate with about 7,700 heating degree days a year. A cold-climate heat pump is recommended — modern units heat efficiently well below freezing.
