The Home Electrification Order of Operations
Electrifying everything at once is a five-figure mistake waiting to happen. The sequence that maximizes savings per dollar.
Electrify in the wrong order and you’ll oversize some systems, undersize others, and pay twice for electrical work. The right order is mostly universal — and it starts smaller than people expect.
The sequence
- 1. Measure first. A home energy monitor (~$100–$300) shows where power actually goes — every later sizing decision improves. Cheap insulation and air-sealing wins hide here too.
- 2. Panel check. If big loads are coming, confirm your electrical panel has capacity now, and bundle any upgrade with the first project’s permit rather than paying for two site visits.
- 3. Replace what’s dying, electric. The cheapest time to electrify a furnace, water heater or stove is when the old one fails — the swap premium is small compared to a healthy-appliance replacement. This is where a heat pump usually enters.
- 4. EV charger when the EV arrives — a Level 2 install is a modest, contained project, and overnight rates start saving immediately.
- 5. Solar after loads are known. Size panels to your electrified consumption, not your old bill — solar sized before a heat pump and EV is solar undersized. See state costs.
- 6. Battery last, if your profile justifies one — by now you know your real usage curve and export rates.
