The "heat pumps don’t work in the cold" reputation was earned by 1990s equipment and is now a decade out of date. Modern cold-climate heat pumps deliver full rated heat at 5°F and keep operating well below -10°F — which is why Maine, one of America’s coldest states, has become one of its heaviest adopters.
What changed
Variable-speed compressors and better refrigerant management. Older single-speed units lost capacity fast as temperatures fell, exactly when you needed heat most. Cold-climate models (look for ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certification) run continuously at variable output and maintain 70–100% of capacity in single digits.
What to spec in a cold state
- A certified cold-climate model — the label matters more than the brand.
- Sizing by Manual J calculation, not square-footage rules of thumb — oversized systems short-cycle and underperform.
- A backup plan below design temperature: integrated electric resistance strips or keeping the existing furnace as dual-fuel backup for the coldest weeks.
- Rebates: cold states often pay the biggest heat pump incentives — check your state.
